In the heart of the enchanting rolling hills, lived a shepherd boy. His life was essentially pure, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was essentially to care for his herd of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the wind across the single tree on the peak were his constant co-dwellers. Day upon day, watching over his responsibilities imbued in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
However, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. In one such instance because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a check here troublesome scheme.
Tales of wolves hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One morning he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but saw no beast.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This trick persisted for a few days more. Yet, one day, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy ran for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once broken, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
